Each of us has the capacity to learn to be content; much like we learn to read and write! Since reading and writing does not come naturally, we have had to learn...
Yet the same happens where some learn to be content better than others ...
Paul had learned to be content. Since everyone of us has the intelligence to learn it is well within our ability to become content in our life!
The secret to Paul's contentment was that he divorced or became dead to himself; because he went into totally living for God! Dead people do not need anything... He could be totally content in whatever circumstance he found himself! No earthly desires therefore selfishness gone!
Eliminate selfishness and you can be content ... All depression and discontentment centers around self centeredness! No one really desires depression yet very few feel any responsibility or authority to maintain positive emotions in the face of negative events...
Paul makes special mention that his contentment worked in whatever state he found himself in... That means that Godly contentment is not dependent upon any earthly circumstances... This is totally the opposite of the way most people think today !
Most think that emotions follow circumstances... Which is not true!
Actually emotions follow the way we think; therefore we can either think negatively - selfishly or choose to think upon things which are: lovely, true, pure, just, honest, or praise worthy or of good report regardless of our circumstances!
As goes our thinking so goes our emotions!
