Chumash Medicine Woman Dies
The last Chumash Medicine woman, Cecilia Garcia, died at her home in Ensenada Tuesday May 14, 2012. She gifted me with the love of California native plants.

She is buried in a beautiful place that she even mentioned that she would like to live. Everything worked out seamlessly. Pictures were said to capture the spirit in that moment, so none were taken of Cecilia or her burial. She was dressed in her native regalia from head to toe, laying on her side in the fetal position facing West and is cradling a sea turtle shell with eagle wings against her chest. Her favorite rattle, dancing sticks, coyote friends and medicinal tools are with her on her journey. She was buried shortly before sunset on Friday with blessings and songs by her community."

I did not know Cecilia well, having met her only twice--once for a class on California medicinal plants and another for a personal healing, but she was a formidable woman who made quite an impression on me! In fact, the first time I met her I was scared of her, she was so powerful, with her laugh more a cackle than a laugh and the strong, no-nonsense way she expressed herself. But when I had the healing with her, I could sense the caring and nurturing under her sometimes gruff exterior.
One thing Cecilia gifted me with as a result of my having worked with her is an abiding love for California native plants, especially the sages. During my healing she had me take fresh-picked California medicinal plants and sew them into a neckerchief. I still wear this around my neck every night when I go to sleep, and it has been about a year now; I just love the smell of the dried plants! I feel as though the plants are my friends--I talk to them when I see them during nature walks, and they talk to me in the ways of Spirit.
This is quite an amazing healing for me, because since childhood I was told I was "allergic" to most plants, trees, "weeds" and sages and did not find out until adulthood that this was just NOT TRUE--these plants are my ALLIES, and I reacted so strongly to them since childhood because they wanted to GET MY ATTENTION. Working with Cecilia helped confirm this for me, and I not only do I now believe this, I KNOW this through experience.
Thank you Cecilia, for the BEing that you were on Earth and the BEing that you still are. You have joined your Ancestors after a job well done on the earth plane of existence.
