Today is the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, were Christ gave authority to St. Peter. Christ said to St. Peter 'you are the rock whom I build my church upon', hence the First Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.
Unlike any empire in the world, the succession of Popes after St. Peter has never been broken, and have lasted 2000 years, and 1 and half billion members later.
St. Peter who the Lord gave the keys of the Kingdom of heaven, and 'whatsoever is binds on earth will be bind in heaven, and whatsoever he looses on earth shall be loose in heaven'. say the Lord. Christ marks the authority of St. Peter with these words.
St. Peter and his successors are the Vicars of Christ. The founder of the Roman Catholic Church our Lord Jesus Christ, makes it so that St. Peter who is given name 'Cephas' which is translated 'the Rock' of whom he builds his church, so wherever St. Peter and his successors the Pope's go at the helm of the Church, is where Christ true church is.
