EDIBLE CITY CELEBRATION 2009

Who we are

San Diego Food Not Lawns is a food justice organization
committed to enlightening people about the problems
with our food system and working to address those problems
with creative solutions.

What we do
We run Backyard Farmers (a produce consignment program),
a movie (documentary) series, a monthly potluck
with guest speakers and seed swaps.
We also host the Cultivating Food Justice Conference,
which is one of the largest food justice conferences in California.

What's next

There's always something being planned throughout
the year. The next big event is a series
called Edible City Celebration
and will include a weeklong series of workshops (
like how to make your own ginger ale and
how to compost) and events (like
a local iron chef competition and a movie night).

Each year, we sponsor and plan a weeklong series
of events called Edible City Celebration.
Originally, this series was called Eat In Act Out week.
Below you'll find information about the planned events this year.

Sunday, Aug 23 - Guided Tour of the Hillcrest Farmers' Market
Never been to a Farmers' Market before? Maybe you've been but you were feeling a bit overwhelmed by the whole thing. Maybe you're a seasoned market veteran but want to see the market from a different angle. Whatever your experience, now you have a great and unique opportunity to have a guided tour of one of San Diego's largest and best-known markets. Leslie Goldman will be providing a tour of the market toward the end of the market, when the deals are the best on locally produced veggies, plant starts and artisan crafts (both edible and not). Join Leslie as he introduces you to four of the featured produce vendors of the market and get behind where your food is grown and what life on the small family farms are like today.

Monday, Aug 24 - Fermentation
Learn how to make kimchee and ginger ale. Ginger ale making is now even easier than ever. We'll be sharing the latest recipe that allows people to brew a batch of ginger ale in just 24 hours using standard baker's yeast, sugar and ginger and a super high-tech device: a 2-liter soda bottle.

Location: TBD
Time: 6 - 8pm

Tuesday, Aug 25 - CSA Meal Planning
CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a program that lets you subscribe to a local farm and get produce every week from that farm. It's a way to save a little money and also provide the local farm with a consistent revenue stream. One of the challenges with CSAs (and meal planning in general) is trying to make meals and dishes out of the diverse ingredients that come in a CSA box (or Farmers' Market) each week. If you're interested in CSAs and want to learn more or if you're just interested in planning healthier meals for your family, this event is a great fit for you. Cooks will show the audience how to stay nimble with challenging ingredients and the jea;tj benefits of keeping a wide array of vegetables in your diet.

Location: City Heights Wellness Center (4440 Wightman St # 200, 92105)
Time: 6-8pm

Wednesday, Aug 26 - Movie Night
Come see a short documentary about something remarkable happening in the fields and orchards of the Pacific Northwest. Small family farmers are making a comeback. They're growing much healthier food, and lots more food per acre, while using less energy and water than factory farms.

Location: Mission Valley Library (2123 Fenton Pkwy, 92108)
Time: 6-8pm

Thursday, Aug 27 - Food Preservation
Learn to make your own preserves just like our grandparents did.

Location: TBD
Time: 6-8pm
Links: TBD
Friday, Aug 28 - Locavore Day
Whether lunch or dinner, dine at restaurant serving up the local flavors while supporting SD Food Not Lawns. We've partnered with eateries specializing in serving local food. This food tastes better, is better for you and keeps money in the pockets of other San Diegans. A portion of the proceeds from all the restaurants listed below on this day will go to support Food Not Lawns. See a full list of our sponsors below:
