Inversion therapy with hiatal hernia?
by frederickson 15 y
I am a big believer in the many benefits of inversion therapy discussed on this forum.
However, I am afraid I have one of the few conditions that Teeter has contraindicated with inversion therapy... a hiatal hernia. This is a relatively common problem, and I am sure many who invert have a hiatal hernia, but I have had acid reflux that I had not experienced for a few years before I started inverting. Now I had also begun more intense abdominal exercises recently as well, which could be contributing to the problem.
In addition to the warnings from the manufacturer, hanging upside down ...

Hiatal Hernia
When bacteria have spread to the diaphram and weakened it, along with the upper stomach valve, food is allowed to get pushed up right through the diaphram. Pressure in the abdom from overeating or sitting in an easy chair pushes it up. Walk after eating. Empty the stomach before going to bed. Don’t sit in recliners. Very many of us, about 25%, have a small hiatal hernia. It only hurts if it is inflamed. Work a ...

Amazing! You just diagnosed it like that?! O_O;; Bah... none of the doctors I visited, knew what was wrong.
Yes, it probably is a ” hiatal hernia” since I do have a feeling that food or something has been trapped in my stomach.
So, is it hiatal hernia as well as GERD? Or is it because of the tear in my stomach wall(only hiatal hernia), that’s why I’m getting acid coming up into my throat?
And is the treatment for hiatal hernia the same as that for GERD?
And thanks! :) You rock, dude. =P

Just something to consider, a possibility: A lot of your symptoms sound like hiatal hernia. A bad one can put pressure on your spine, affecting nerves elsewhere, which may be what your strange sensations are coming from. And it explains some of the digestive problems, food feeling like it’s getting stuck, burping, etc. Hiatal hernia is a great mimicker of many other health problems. Your sleep pattern sound a lot like a friend of mine who was just diagnosed with a very bad hiatal hernia. She had no idea she even had one. Her acid reflux was silent, and her hernia is so bad the pressure on ...

I’ve have had serious pain in my gall region for 10 years, and done over 50 liver flushes, but with no positive results or reduction in pain. The heart rate increase sounds more like you had an allergic response to something you ate. In the future if this happens you can try some quercetin, which is a natural antihistamine.
As for the hiatal hernia, losing weight can sometimes help with hiatal hernias. If it is large enough though then surgery may be your only option.

I have been doing some reading and I think i have a hiatal hernia. One thing that helped me pin point it was a site that mentioned that if you breath in, and your solar plexus (under breast plate) does not move, but instead your shoulders move, you more likely have a hiatal hernia.
I also have that feeling that food is stuck right in that area and the heart burn after eating. I also have bloating and burping.
I found some good videos that show how to get the stomach back down, I will give those a try and see if I get improvement, if not i might go to a chiro.

Part of what you are describing sounds like a hiatal hernia. And it does sound like a mild case of acid reflux, which is commonly associated with hiatal hernias.
Stress will increase stomach acid levels, and if some of this is seeping back in to the lower esophagus then it could cause the burning in the lower esophagus, but not the upper esophagus. I have posted on ideas of how to deal with hiatal hernias on here before. It would not hurt to try some of the suggestions just in case there is one present.

The sliding hiatal hernia also doesn’t coincide w/ my symptoms, unless somehow drinking gin is capable of pulling a hernia up or causing one? The sliding hernia is the most common, often causing acid reflux or GERD. Burning sensations and a feeling of fullness in the stomach and chest are sometimes mistaken for a heart attack. Hiatal Hernia or Gallstones ?
R by telman 17 y
A Hiatal Hernia is difficult to diagnose because it impersonates other medical conditions. People can get quite severe chest pain and think they are about to have a heart attack. More concerning is that a Hiatal Hernia can give rise to the regurgitation of bile acid, chronic indigestion, stomach pain and give rise to the notion that the cause of all this grief is a stomach ulcer or a biliary complaint. The doctor may conclude that the problem is caused by gallstones, and low and behold on ultrasonic examination, gallstones and sludge is detected. This is not surprising because so many peop ...

You know that the very common hiatal hernia can cause fatigue, breathlessness, anxiety, panic and cardiac problems including racing heart and hypertension. And you probably know Dr Steven Rochlitz’s book, Hiatal Hernia Syndrome/Vagus Nerve Imbalance.
It includes illustrations for self-correction of the hernia, the vagus nerve, the diaphragm. But it also relates that for some people corrections don’t last long, and advises people to look into 2 often related conditions: PFO [aka the hole in the heart] and porphyria.

It’s possible that you may have dysbiosis in the gut - bacterial/fungal (candida).
This can give the symptoms you describe.
Also, if you take antacids, you are not digesting your food properly, aggravating the dysbiosis (pathogens will eat your food) - white substance in stool is highly indicative of candida presence as a fungus.
Also, low stomach acid/antacid overuse will eliminate the first line of defense against pathogens (acidic environment is necessary in the stomach to digest things like protein and to destroy pathogens in the food).
Also, the esophagus may be eroding du ...

The left side pain with heartburn is a sign of something other than gallstones which is associated with the right side. You may have a hiatal hernia which is strangling your stomach. Also pain on the left side is sometimes to do with the spleen. You may like to google hiatal hernia to read more about this illusive condition.
Alternatively the herbs you were taking may have trigger IBS which is a very painful condition incurring abdominal pain that radiates out to the limbs depending upon which part of the bowel is affected. You can determine this my studying yo ...

I read that hiatal hernia can feel like a heart attack. You can feel it in the chest. It can be difficult to take deep breath. I’m not getting that symptom though.
Some people don’t get any symptoms at all.
If you put fingers on breastbone, the solar plexus area and take deep breath, you should be able to take deep breath without raising shoulders. If you can’t it could indicate hiatal hernia.

Hiatal hernias will generally create a "catching" feeling at the base of the sternum when harder objects are swallowed such as tough steak or pills. Some chiropractors can put these back in. Here is an old post on hiatal hernias:

If it is H. pylori the second option is licorice root, which kills H.pylori and also helps to build up the adrenals. I recommend boiling the root for 15 to 20 minutes in water to make a tea that he can drink throughout the day.

If it is really bad then surgery may be required. But this should be a last resort.
A hiatal hernia can pinch or irritate the vagus nerve leading to a number of symptoms including headaches, heart burn, poor digestion, etc. Most of the symptoms come from the pinching leading to a decline in stomach acid formation. The lack of stomach acid in turn leads to fermentation in the stomach, inability to properly absorb minerals and some vitamins. These lead to other problems. Lack of acid also inhibits ...

The lower esophageal shincter (LES) is where the esophagus empties into the stomach and is responsible for keeping stomach contents from passing back up into the esophagus (reflux). The esophagus passes through the diaphragm and the LES is located below this point. Sometimes the LES and stomach can protrude up through the diaphragm and get stuck. This is a hiatal hernia. This will usually lead to refluxing of stomach contents back up into the esophagus. Many Chiropractors know how to adjust this hiatal hernia condition to pull the stomach and lower esophagus back down.
