Re: My hair is falling out!!!
by mamaj 16 y
I just had my mirena out last month, but my hair resolved itself 2 years ago. it just stopped falling out. the only theory I have is that alopecia is an autoimmune disorder (where the immune system attacks cells it is not supposed to), and maybe my body managed to rebalance itself (homeostasis).
I would search mirena hair loss on this forum and check into what the other ladies have to say about it post removal.

I have had an epiphany for me anyway. Here it is: MAYBE SOME WOMEN ARE SENSITIVE TO HORMONES BECAUSE THEY ARE ALREADY WOMEN ENOUGH! case in point mirena hair loss, sure you lose hair from your head, but lets face it, its seems to also grow where it previously hadn’t... chin, upper lip... you get the point. now my question is, has anyone had a birth control that caused them no side effects? the implant in my arm caused me to gain 50lbs in 3 months when it was removed is when they put the mirena in, which was also devastating to my health. I think maybe some of us women, who seem to have th ...

Can the Mirena cause hair loss?

Hi,
I’m 24 years old and had the Mirena inserted 2 1/2 years ago. A year later I started experiencing excessive hair loss (still ongoing!), I ask my gyno if the mirena could be the cause of my hair loss and he said it’s not likely. After reading all these forums on how mirena ruined so many peoples lives, I’m left wondering can this be the reason to my hair loss? I’ve had my thyroid check and blood work and all is ok. So this is what I’m left with. I’m desperate to find a diagnosis for my hair loss, I’m too young to be experiencing this!
Please if there is anyone with information reg ...

I also had a period a few days after removal, then noticed my hair was falling out more than normal ever since. I hadn’t had hair loss while I had the mirena in like some others. (Had many different side effects instead - heart palpitations, panic attacks to name a couple). My hair had been the opposite, thicker than normal, like it was when I was preggers. I had mirena out 5/1, and hair loss seems to be slowing down a bit.

Hi- I had the Mirena from May 07-Nov 09 and suffered a lot of hair loss during that period, as well as numerous other symptoms. As soon as I realised what was causing all of my problems I had the Mirena removed and thankfully I haven’t suffered from hair loss since.
I agree with some of the other posters that problems with the Mirena are caused by silicone in the device- as many of my symptoms were exactly the same as those of silicone poisoning.

Dear Adgirl,
I am a mother of two terrific children, with a loving husband and I’m a nursing student. I had mirena inserted four an a half years ago, after, the birth of my second child. My hair loss began about 16 months later. The OBGYN told me it was not mirena causing my hair loss. He said, ”if Mirena was to blame it would have started within a couple of months of insertion.” Over the years I’ve had so many blood test all with normal results. I was beginning to give up until I found websites like this one, allowing women to share their stories. I finally had mirena removed four m ...

It took a few months being off the nuva ring to notice an improvement. I then had the mirena for 5 weeks and now that I am closing in on 6 months post I have noticed a decrease in hair loss, while it was not nearly as bad as the nuva ring, I think all bc have an impact on our hair. I got my mirena removed 7/18/07 after three months of hellish side effects (severe anxiety/depression/fogginess/aches and pains/change in bowel habits, etc!). I have been ”shedding” excessive amounts of hair since probably mid september and am starting to get scared. My hair is much thinner than it was. I ABSOLUTELY attribute this to mirena in one way or another. I had blood work done right before I had the mirena inserted and everything was normal so I don’t think that it would be thyroid or anything like that. I didn’t know the numbness was part of the mirena. I have had my mirena in since Sept. 2009. I also have numbness in my hands and left heel. The hair loss I have encountered is unbelievable, also weight gain and tired all the time. I really don’t want to be around anyone or go out of the house. I believe that is depression that has set in. I didn’t realize that these things could be related to the mirena. I did know about the hair loss but didn’t expect the amount of hair that I have lost. I am going to have this thing taken out ASAP. Hi all. I have enojoyed reading this blog and now feel like I may not be alone.
I have my second Mirena. First one was placed after the birth of my second child in 2005. In 2010 I had that one removed and had a second one placed. In my opinion, the Mirena has always been great - NO PERIODS!!! I suffered from terrible periods as a teenager (fever, vomiting, diarrhea, severe cramping that would disable me for 2 days) and was put on BC pills to help with these symptoms. The BC pills worked well during this time too.

hi, pleased you are feeling better in yourself already. It is quite common for people to feel fine on mirena for a year or more, then the side effects suddenly hit, so i am pleased that you got it out, because things would only have got much worse. I had a little hair loss while mirena was in, but nothing much to worry about - my other side effects were much worse lol. Yes, I’ve had this. When I first starting losing my health 3 years ago, long before I even suspected the Mirena, I asked my Dr. about it at an appt., and he looked at my scalp and said it looked rashy.
Using Bosley products for hair loss definitely helps me. My scalp is very healthy, and my hair loss almost stops when I use the products daily. I don’t think it makes grow back any faster, but slowing the loss is helpful!

I had my Mirena removed Monday, and I’ve gone back on Alesse. February will be a year that the Mirena is out and I still lose some hair in the shower (that’s where I see it mostly) but not as much as when I had the Mirena. It was bad! I see growth, the top of my head is all frizzy because it’s all hair about 1/2” to 1 inch long standing straight up and out. Love the look. I think I just posted this a few months ago myself LOL
I had hair loss for about 2 yrs before having mirena removed in May, I had mirena in for the full 5 yrs.
I dont have bald patches but it has thinned out a lot, I have thin hair as it is!
Its been almost 5 mths since removal and hair loss slows then picks up then slows again. But I have noticed in the last few weeks that my hair is a lot more softer feeling, healthier looking!
I am just thankful right now that I dont have bald patches or it hasnt thinned out so bad its noticeable.

Some of the effects from the Mirena were memory loss (I was seeing a neurologist and a psychologist for months), depression and anxiety and excessive hair loss. I’m glad you are taking action and getting the mirena out, that way, after a few months you can se if the symptoms improve. Since you had it in pretty shortly after the baby, thee might be some normal postpartum blues issues going on too -- so it would be hard for anyone to know exactly what was due to the mirena, and what was a due to a different reaction to the last birth -- but since I had my Mirena in last year, I believe that the mirena might have had a lot to do with it. Implannon uses the same synthetic hormone as mirena(you will find a wealth of information about the terrible side effects of this device on CZ), this synthetic hormone causes many nasty side effects , one of which is hypothyroid symptoms, hormonal imbalance, (when I used mirena my body stopped making progesterone and it has taken many months to get my hormones rebalanced). Both of these problems can cause the hair to fall out. This hair loss will continue and probably get worse, until the implannon is removed.

Hi Charly, I had the same problems with mirena, which is an IUD with the same progestin as implanon. Please urge her to have it removed, the symptoms will only get worse, it can cause hypothyroid symptoms (one of these is hair loss), hypertension and many other nasties. There is a mirena side effects forum on CZ, and as its the same synthetic hormone, the side effects will be the same, only worse with implanon because there is more hormone released into the body, than there is with the IUD.

The system is trying to rid itself of this hormone and I have to wonder if it is similar in nature. Just thinking out loud:) I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing hair loss.
