Thick Mucus stuck to back of throat?

I've got thick mucus stuck to the back of my thoat that looks like it runs down my asophagus. I've actually got back there with a Q-Tip and pulled some off. It's really thick, dry, and sticky. Could this stuff be covering my entire asphagus? I've got this feeling that something is stuck in my thoat. Sometimes if feels really back and sometimes I can hardly feel it. Also, when I eat food it sometimes seems like it goes down real slow. What could be causing this mucus build up, where is it coming from and how can I get rid of it? Should I go see a ear, nose, and throat doctor?

Thanks!
