Herpes can be mistaken for many other conditions.

Hi stl2iptx,

Thanks for your post!  I hope I can help shed some light on the situation.

You mentioned that your friend tested negative for STDs when he received his recent check-up.   It is very easy for Herpes to be overlooked in a check-up.

This is because you need to have an active infection in order for the Doctor to dectect herpes on sight (which for most people only happens now and then).  If a person has no active symptoms a blood test can be done, however, these blood tests are specifically for herpes and are normally only done by request.  They can be expensive and so are rarely performed with a routine check-up.

There are few points that you should know:

1.  Herpes can be mistaken for many different ailments.

Commonly confused conditions.

2.  You can contract herpes in the gential area from receiving oral sex from a person who has a cold sore.  This can happen even if they do not have a cold sore at the time of contact.

See How Herpes is Spread for details.

3.  If you suspect that it could be herpes you should ask your Doctor to perform a Herpes Specific Test.

See Herpes Diagnosis for details.

The symptoms of herpes can sometimes resemble blisters, bumps, cuts, sores, or a rash in the infected area so it is important to get the infection diagnosed correctly.

4. Scabies is contageous but can be effectively and easily treated

Scabies Information

Hope this helps, stl2iptx!

Warm regards,
