The red rubber enema bulb syringe is the way I remember the first enemas I was given as a child.
My aunt was a nurse. I grew up with her. She believed the enema should be given to the child often. Especially if had a cold, flu, fever or if the child was constipated.
Since leaving home I have gotten enemas with the bulb syringe. Much larger than the one my aunt had. It can be awkward getting a bulb syringe enema "solo." But I have done it many times. And actually enjoy getting a bulb enema instead of the bag one. s
I used the bulb syringe on my two for years. Especially when traveling. It was easier to take along on a trip. Instead of the bag or bucket enema.
I disagree with you saying "once you have an enema bag, you won't want to go back to the bulb." I always wanted to go back to the bulb syringe.
