Dreaming Ourselves Alive

Our dreams are a portal to our "larger" selves, and if we allow ourselves the freedom of opening to those energies from "beyond," we can experience much healing and learning as well.

One of Sigmund Freud’s most famous lines was his description in 1899 of dreams as being “the royal road to the unconscious.”  I’ll go just a bit further in 2006 in proclaiming dreams to be the “royal road to our multidimensional selves.”

Pioneering psychologist Stan Grof writes that “in our everyday state of consciousness we identify with only a small fraction of who we really are.”  That’s where our dreams come in:  they take us on a nightly journey, leaving our everyday state of consciousness behind, and open us to that larger fraction of who we really are.

Imagine us walking around Los Angeles, California, as visitors from another galaxy, using this “uniform” of skin and bones as our “spacesuit” for planet Earth.  Imagine our dreams as being the communication devices we use to stay in touch with “back home”:  the transmission links that keep us connected to our souls.

Our dreams offer us, in an overall way, reminders of what we have come to this planet to accomplish, using the language of our souls in order to communicate.  Our souls, you see, are very creative essences:  poetic, joyful, and filled with great humor.  They may use images from “our everyday state of consciousness” to speak to us in our dreams, but not the language.  Our dreams expect us to be able to use that metaphoric, poetic, humorous language that is soulful, because it comes from our souls.

If we are imagining ourselves as visitors from another galaxy, we might say that our dreams use the language from “back home.”  We have forgotten that language while here on planet Earth, and since we don’t remember the language of “back home,” we have to stumble about in order to uncover the “meaning” of our dreams.  It’s like an Argentinean traveling to Houston and barely able to remember Spanish while away from home.  Well, something like that.

Yet, our dreams also carry energies that we aren’t equipped to decipher when using “our everyday state of consciousness.”  Dreams take us to those aspects of ourselves that we aren’t aware of in our waking state.  Dreams are timeless, and, thusly, can sometimes share with us aspects of ourselves that are existing in other times and places.  In this sense, dreams are vehicles that take us along to show us what might be going on in a “parallel life,” for instance, in a way that allows us to be able to use that information to help us with a situation in “this” life, in 2006.

Quantum physicists say time is an illusion, and “what we call matter and its movement in time is an interference pattern between an infinite number of parallel universes,” according to Fred Alan Wolf, a quantum physicist and star of the popular spiritual movie, What the Bleep.  Since time does not exist, we are simultaneously alive in all of these universes.  That means we are dreaming, at times, of past lives or parallel lives, just as those “you’s” of past lives or parallel lives are dreaming of the now “you.”  It gets crazy if you think about it too hard.

What this means is that we experience in our dreams aspects of ourselves that are “off-limits” to us in our waking life.  Sure, we may “catch” glimpses of such aspects in deja-vu’s or visions, but for the most part, these experiences come via our dreams.   We experience our “future” selves as well, and that is the juicy morsel of creative energy that dreams offer us for the life we experience in this moment.  It is that energy we can use to create new and better lives for ourselves right now!

It’s kind of like fueling up at the best kind of galactical gas station.  Dreams offer the highest-performance gasoline:  fuel power that not only powers our vehicle of life, but also offers us insights into how we can live this life better and more economically.

We engage energies in our dreams that are so deep within our psyches that to bring them back in their original form is impossible, because we don’t have a language to explain those energies.  The best we can get are abstract shapes or geometric symbols.  They represent those aspects of ourselves that are healing energies, in a sense.  They are massive container of healing energy, and we feel those during those mornings when we wake up feeling so light and rejuvenated.

Even in death, we are using knowledge and wisdom to pass on to our other existences, our other lives—if not this one.  How many times do we receive dreams from our dearly departed relatives, giving us some special message or a reaffirmation of living our remaining life to its fullest?  Through our dreams, we our reminded by our departed loved ones, along with our past and future selves, of the value and importance of this life.  It’s something we forget quite often.  And in order to remember—and to connect with the multidimensionality of our existence on Earth—we use that communication device known as the dream.

But we have to listen, though.  You see, this takes a special kind of listening when it comes to the dreaming world, and each one of us is well equipped to listen in that way—contrary to popular belief!  It only takes an act of courage, of trust, and of the willingness to give up the need for control.

As the dream might say, “Try me, trust me, and I’ll be grateful.”
