The Art of Listening

Receiving letters from the soul is a beautiful, marvelous experience--and we get them every night in our dreams! It is as though we give poetry to our life when we listen to our dreams.

“As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being. It may even be assumed that just as the unconscious affects us, so the increase in our consciousness affects the unconscious” —C. G. Jung

We imagine that we woke up this morning with our head filled with garbled thoughts, strange ideas and awkward images. Perhaps it seems like we had been in a room filled with weird surroundings before waking; but, no, we were right here in bed, beside our loved one. Meanwhile, there’s still that distant memory of a conversation…

Those “garbled thoughts, strange ideas and awkward images” are, instead, from a place well-known to our dreaming self, that part of us that moves about in other lands while we are asleep. Freud called dreams “the royal road to the unconscious,” and for Jung, understanding them was key to becoming an “individuated” person. Today, they hold just as much—if not more—power and potential for each of us in our waking lives.

My own dreams began to call out for a greater role in my life over a decade ago, in the midst of life-changing events that would lead me to a world I could not have imagined today. I have learned to treat my dreams like butterflies that have landed in my waking life, and arise each morning trying to hold on to those butterflies before they fly off—as dreams seem to do once we return to waking life!

In a sense, it as though dreams are messages from our future self: that higher, greater part of us that is looking back, in a way, reminding us of the higher potentials we have for each waking moment. We’re stuck here living a day-to-day existence, trying to just get by, in a sense—and this part is jumping up and down, waving its arms, shouting out, “Hey, look over here, wake up: you’ve forgotten what you came here for.” That’s the dream, the package of images and metaphors we receive each night. It is as though we are being reminded of our Truth and greater reality from the future.

The hardest thing for any human to do is to remember. What do you spend over half of your life doing? Remembering. That is what dreams serve for you—they are reminding you of your soul’s purpose: the reason for you being here. Dreams are coming from your soul. They are reminders to yourself and they are wake up calls from your future self. When you can’t remember, you need someone to help you remember. The soul will write you many, many letters with the intention of reminding you to wake up. It’s time you started opening those letters!
