A family member is an artist who wipes excess acrylic paint from her brushes onto paper towels; instead of throwing the towels away they are given to me to use for Eco Art.
The 3 photos show the progression--first the paper towel/paint is put on top of unbleached waxed paper*, then saturated with non-VOC acrylic glaze creating adhesion between the towel and the waxed paper. After drying, the towel is saturated with white glue; the result is a shiny, very flexible, velum-like "fabric" that is then cut into shape, poked with holes from a big needle (using a thimble to prevent sore fingers)in a random design, hand embroidered, then folded into a greeting card. This time, instead of gluing the "fabric" onto white paper for the interior of the card, the thick scrap art paper was sewed to the "fabric" along the folded card edge to make a greeting card "book" (3rd photo)--in this photo you can see the inside cover of the card, the reverse image of the embroidery. Usually the back side of the embroidery is quite messy as it's then covered up by paper, but this time pains were taken to try and make the back "neat" since it would be showing. You can see the golden-colored unbleached wax paper backing on the inside cover.

Here's another used paper towel/acrylic paint creation. Instead of adhering the paper towel/paint to unbleached wax paper, this time it was saturated with white glue first, adhering the paper towel to a thick white art paper scrap; after this dried, acrylic glaze was applied. This creation is stiff and thick, unlike when using a waxed paper backing, but the white paper backing enhances the color to make it "brighter" looking.
I had a frame with a crummy-looking fabric cover over wood, so the fabric was pulled off and then the new paper towel "creation" was cut to fit the front of the frame. The center of the art work is more of the paper towel "creation", with the paint colors enhanced with hand embroidery. One paper towel with paint was reused for this Eco Art: the top layer of towel has the most paint on it and this was used for the "center piece" of the work, and the bottom layer of towel, with less paint on it, was used for the frame. Although small, the hand embroidery took a long time and was tough going, as the paper backing is thicker than waxed paper and more difficult to sew through; it took about 10 hours to hand embroider the little 4" X 4" square; during this time I listen to music or just "space out" while sewing. For me, hand sewing is very relaxing, almost meditative.
