February 12, 2006 - Another Good Raw Day 18 y
Today I snuck in a glass of red wine!
A busy day in which I was both studying and cleaning in preparation for guests who are coming this week. I haven’t thought about what eating raw will be like with a house of guests, probably because I’m not worried about staying raw. This is despite the fact that they will have barbecued ribs and all sorts of foods I would have gladly eaten in the past. I am simply too dedicated to eating raw to eat that stuff now. Tonight I did do something a bit different and had a glass of red wine. Is it raw? Maybe! Some wines are not, apparently. What do I know about wine? It was a nice treat, ... read more
Summary for Week 5 on Raw Foods 18 y
Wow- this weight loss on raw foods still amazes me
February 12, 2006 WEEK 5: It’s the Weekly Raw Weigh-In Show!
This week my calories never dipped below 1200. My fat intake was higher than I’d planned, but it doesn’t seem to matter as far as weight loss goes. I can’t tell you what it means to my arteries to eat 62 grams of plant fat, but raw foodists will tell you that it isn’t the least bit harmful. I haven’t made that doctor’s appointment yet, but it’s on my agenda to get all my levels checked. I’ll report my cholesterol and blood pressure, etc. as soon as I get ’em.
Here is the weekly summary with the weight loss reported below.

February 11, 2006- 42 days Raw! 18 y
I've uploaded the pictures of the raw enchiladas and "mock salmon sushi" from the raw restaurant
I had a very busy day today, so I decided to have only ”easy” foods today. A salad and a smoothie for breakfast, a salad at Whole Foods while I was out, and then another smoothie when I got back in late in the evening. And since I was still not full and had plenty of calories to spare, I had extra orange juice as my late night snack.
I remembered to upload the camera shots of my meal from the Go Raw Cafe yesterday. They are a tiny bit blurry, but they show the sushi, enchiladas and smoothie we had at the Go Raw Cafe in Las Vegas. They were scrumptious!!

I Made My First Raw Bread Today! 18 y
I made raw bread in the dehydrator and can't wait to make some more!
I was so excited about the great food I had at the Go Raw Cafe in Las Vegas that I asked one of the owners how they make their awesome raw tortillas. She told me that they use vegetables and ground flax seeds, and told me to grind the seeds in a coffee grinder because a food processor doesn’t do as good of a job. They mix the ground seeds with vegetables, herbs and spices and then dry it for 4 to 5 hours at 95 degrees. She said to use whatever vegetables I wanted, so when I got home I gave it a try.
Well, first I went to Target and bought a coffee grinder, then went to Bed, Bath and ... read more

I went back to the raw restaurant and- well, you'll have to read about it!
Today I went back to the raw restaurant. I decided to try something completely new, so I went for the ”mock salmon sushi”. It was DELICIOUS! I didn’t expect it to taste like salmon, and it didn’t, but it did have a slight taste reminiscent of fish. That’s because they use herbs and spices that you would use on fish, such as dill. I thought that was pretty clever. They serve it with nama shoyu (the brand pictured above). I still can’t get over how great the sushi was. I now feel emboldened to try my own sushi again, this time with some of the stuff they put in theirs, like spiced/her ... read more

Tried a replacement recipe for hummus today
New Recipe Today
Someone sent me a recipe for replacement hummus and I tried it today. It calls for 3 zucchinis, 2 tbs of tahini, 3 clove garlic, shallots, lemon juice, 3 dates and salt. After putting in everything except 1 of the garlic cloves and the lime I have to say it tasted....horrid. But wait! It was very bitter, so I added a teaspoon of raw honey and voilà- it actually tasted... all right! I added 1 tablespoon of tahini to make it more reminiscent of hummus, and since I had no lemons I used lime juice to taste. I add a little extra salt and since I didn’t have any shallo ... read more
Februrary 8th 2006- I've Come a Long Way! 18 y
It's strange to see how far I've come since starting raw on January 1st!
Today I was pressed for time, so I had the dreaded hummus sandwich- twice! It’s so easy to make hummus sandwiches. If I could just come up with a replacement for the hummus- something that would fill me the way hummus does- I would make that instead when I’m in a hurry or need something quick and easy for the university. Of course I’m now suffering from gastric distress from the double dose of hummus.
Tomorrow some people are bringing party food to one of our classes. This is a first for me- so far in class I’ve passed up candy dishes and offers of gum. I’ve not allowed myself to ... read more

A great fruit salad wasn't enough to safe me from a stressful day
MMMM- a great breakfast! Why do I keep forgetting to start my day with all fruits? Probably because I still remember my first experience eating a breakfast fruit salad that left me with a hunger headache way before I normally would have been ready to eat again. I don’t seem to have that problem anymore. It could be because I am used to eating less per meal, or that I’m used to the sugars in fruit, or that the ingredidents I’m using now are more suited to my body and tastes.
I juiced tangerines with a mango to get 8 oz. of scrumptious juice. For the salad, I combined two types of ... read more
Is Soy Healthy? 18 y
I address the pros and cons of consuming soy products
I became interested in the soy issue because not all raw foodists are 100% raw. Some are, but there are those who do not maintain 100% raw at all times, or who consider themselves some percentage of raw, with mostly-raw referred to as ”high raw” (I don’t label myself). Some of these raw foodists will eat tofu and other soy products. And many raw foodists consume nama shoyu, which is unpasteurized soy sauce. I consume nama shoyu but have decided to stay away from other highly processed soy products. However, I may decide to try edamame some day.
I get emails from Dr. Mercola’s website ... read more
February 6th, 2006- Fun with Appliances 18 y
I'm trying to add variety to my raw food menu now that I have these cool appliances
I’ve been using my appliances to add new foods to my weekly menu. Using the blender, I’ve enjoyed making smoothies. My favorite recipe is 1 small mango or 1/2 a large one, a small or medium sized banana, 1 cup or so of berries, the juice of one tangerine, and water. This makes a deliciously healthy and beautiful smoothie that is just as much a pleasure to look at as to drink. Using the food processor I have chopped up cacao nibs into near powder and found that it was fine in flavoring smoothies. I processed an ounce of cacao nibs and only needed about two teaspoons of the result ... read more

I tried coconut water today- didn't like it!!
Today started out great, but by evening I couldn’t think of what I wanted to eat. I tried to make a smoothie using coconut water, cacao, dates and a banana but it turned out yucky and I didn’t finish it. Finally I decided to eat a hummus sandwich. I’ll be sorry for the hummus, but I guess I’ll survive!

Summary of Week Five eating Raw: Three more pounds down! 18 y
I lost 28 lbs between Jan. 1 and Feb. 5!
I’m so happy to have lost 3 lbs! Although I was a little concerned about the 869-calorie day, I found that my average daily calories came to 1212. That’s pretty cool, as far as I’m concerned. This gives me hope that things may balance themselves out on their own without my worrying too much.
Here is the summary of foods and weight progress. For the sake of brevity I’m going to start leaving out some of the counts, although I still track them on Sparkpeople. I am leaving out B12 because I’ve already established that I don’t get enough from food alone. I’m leaving in the iron because I ... read more

I made "designer" smoothies today- see the photo!
This morning I had a lot of fun making smoothies as you can see in my photo of the servings above. I actually made three flavors of smoothie; each batch had some banana, mango, organge juice and cold water, but each batch had a different type of berry: strawberries, raspberries or blackberries. After I made the three batches I layered them by pouring them in succession into our glasses. I tipped the glasses a little while pouring so that I could create something less boring than strictly horizontal stripes. I garnished the glasses with mint leaves and voilá- the entire family ha ... read more
February 3, 2006- I'll be trying new raw foods this month 18 y
I bought a turnip and some other new foods
Got some new groceries today, including pecans, mejool dates, a young coconut, raw wheat berries, flax seeds, a turnip, zucchini, and frozen blackberries. I’ll be getting raw honey later this week. I read that I can put the turnip in the food processor to make it like rice for raw sushi. I’ve never eaten a turnip before in my life, let alone a raw one! I hope I like it, but I’m not counting on it.
I decided that smoothies are a great way to get more fruit into my diet, so that’s what the blackberries are for. I know some frozen fruits cannot be technically called ”raw” because they ... read more

I think I was a bit dehydrated today, but I got through it
Today I didn’t have to go to class until late afternoon so I tried to eat enough before leaving, but for some reason I felt very hungry/dehydrated during class (and I didn’t have any water to drink). 3 1/2 hours later, on the way home from class, I drank almost a liter of water. Back at home I had nuts and a smoothie- yum! I did not count my calories until after I’d eaten for the day.

February 1st 2006- Starting my Second Month Raw 18 y
I realized today that I now know what it feels like to be satisfied after a meal!
Today worked out pretty well. I had a nice big salad for breakfast and even though I measured everything, I didn’t worry about the calories. I already know that a salad with all those things in it is between 300 to 400 calories, so it wasn’t like I was truly hiding info from myself, but I didn’t restrict what I put on my salad due to calories; instead, I put on it what I had a taste for, which included nuts, a bit of raw cheese I had left over, AND avocado. Three fats all in one meal- but in small amounts. That’s all I needed, really. I wanted the breakfast to be ... read more
