Grapefruits sold at the store today are different than a few decades ago. The ones we had growing up were a pale yellow color and needed sugar put on them. Then the Texas Ruby Red grapefruits appeared, maybe around the early 2000s in my area. They are a lot sweeter than the pale yellow ones.
