Just a quick update: I have now stopped my Azathioprine (Azathioprine = Imuran = Imurek) treatment after about half a year with no progress/success. I was on 50 mg Azathioprine (for the start), then 75 and 100 mg of the medication. Recently we increased to 150 mg per day which resulted in too many immediate side effects (feeling quite sick, lots of headaches etc.), so I went back to 100 mg and have now stopped altogether. Nothing planned for the next few months, will try to get my immune system / body ”back on track” first before doing anything else.   [End]

Overrated. I got approval from a top oral pathologist in the US to use protopic for 6+ months and he even recommended I continue it for longer. As I’ve posted before, protopic helped with inflammation initially however it caused my lips to become extremely sensitive to the sun and eventually I found that it was causing more irritation than I could handle. I’m sorry to bring the bad news, but unfortunately the photodynamic therapy doesn’t work. Neither for exfoliative cheilitis, nor fordyce spots. After first two weeks it all looked promising. Definetely the amount of fordyce spots and their visibility has decreased but not significally. The lips are still peeling, are still dry. It may reduced or even made the inflamation gone. You can try to consult with your doctor about starting off with 5mg doses. My doctor prescribed 5mg of Prednisone for me at one point. The result? It did not help one bit. By the way, I have had EC for 20 years now and I am super opposed to taking drugs. However, if there is one thing that EC does well is that it makes the sufferer desperate for a cure. triamcinolone steroid ountment didnt fix my exfoliative cheilitis...hell it did practically nothing. i rate triamcinolone a 3/10. clobetasol steroid ointment worked better but even that was like 6/10 performance wise not including side effects which are serious/severe esp. long term. steroids are not a long term solution. I’ve been doing the paleo diet since the end of February, that’s about 12, possibly 13 weeks now. I feel fine, I also take an £80 a month green drink so that might be having an effect. For those here that have not already, it is a good idea to eliminate gluten as it has been heavily subscribed as a symptom of inflammatory bowel diseases. You may have the disease and not know about it. The lips are indicators/signs of what is happening to the intestines/stomach. So I’ve left my lips alone for a month, using lip balm sparingly. Today they peeled but theres severe redness and my lips are very inflamed. Also the crusts were ridiculously think and smelled terrible, like rotting flesh. I think the leave alone is making my lips worse. I would not use the word ’’scam’’, because some people may derive some benefit, if any, but they are certainly not the must have product they are made out to be. I’m a browser of these boards, and I’ve seen a few people recommend doing FMT’s to help with either Exfoliative Cheiltis or Candida. I’ve tried this and it doesn’t help. I went to a FMT clinic in the UK 3 months ago as I was desperate for a solution. I had 10 FMT transplants done, and I haven’t seen any improvements in either my Candida or my peeling lips symptoms. My main Candida symptoms are brain fog, anxiety and food intolerances. I have not seen any improvement after FMT. My peeling lips are still the same.   [End]

Instead i have been using this cream called daktarin which contains 2% miconazole nitrate. It has recovered the healed skin i lost when i quit antibiotics. I’ve tried Protopic and Fluocinonide which is a stronger version of it. For me, it’s helped with the inflammation and it holds the skin together as it peels but it’s nothing to stop the actual peeling. Tried Prednisone pills in conjunction with Protopic this summer. Started with 80mg of Pred and tapered down to 10mg over the course of 2 weeks. Started using Protopic like 5 days after I had started using the Prednisone. Kept using it for about three more weeks. Did not cure the condition. Nor did it seem to help it. Even everyone is different. But, just for information purpose, CICAPLAST B5 (from LA ROCHE-POSAY) doesn’t work well to treat my ec: Like a lot of creams, it goes inside the dead skin and makes it more fragile. It burns if you have raw skin on your lip. Good luck if you try it but I do not recommend it. Applying some honey seems to be the best way to manage it in my own opinion. Long story short: I ended up going off Protopic for a month in March. Then I went on a steroid for a week that I’d previously used to target the ”trouble area” which, for me, is an area on the outter part of my lower lip. This area is a bit discolored and hypopigmented?(lighter in color) . Well, years ago when they did it, they did a wedge cut biopsy on the outside lower lip which wasn’t the best choice in hindsight in terms of aesthetics. The biopsy healed but it sucked having that a gash on the lip. The scar eventually healed but there was still peeling over the scar. I would recommend they do a punch biopsy on you from the inner part of the lip from inside of the mouth that penetrated deep enough. That would be the best choice I think cosmetically.   [End]
