Russell Blaylock, the neurosurgeon, recommends taking malate to remove msg and magnesium to protect the brain from exitotoxins like msg, aspartame, etc.  It's in his books Nutritional secrets that Can Save Your Life, and Excitotoxins, The Taste That Kills.
