growing grass is the easiest thing you will ever grow. you could throw some seeds out your car window, come back in 5 days and there would be some grass.

basic instructions:

fill one large or several small containers 1/3 full of seeds. add some liquid, seaweed based, fertilizer such as "ocean grown" or something similar. fill up with filtered water. leave sit overnight or 8 or 9 hours. drain. rinse and drain. keep in dark place, rinsing once or twice a day, don't allow seeds to sit in any amount of water or they will mold. tilt on side so water will drain. after 3 to 5 days you will have a nice sprout. they are ready to plant. sort through sprouts, throw away any unsprouted seeds as these will mold.

clear area, spread seeds on soil, cover over with 1/2 - 3/4 inches of soil. give a good watering. in 2 or 3 days you will see the sprouts poking their heads up looking for the sun, wait until grass is at least 6 inches high to harvest, 8 or 9 inches is optimal.

if you don't want to compost don't worry, just use the ocean grown solution here

if you can't get this specific product where you live then search for something similar. print that products info out bring it to the garden center and tell them you want something just like it. seaweed and/or seawater based is best. get something liquid so you can add it to the soak water. during the soak cycle the seeds absorb a lot of water and whatever is in the water, so if you add great nturients then the seeds will suck them up and they will be fully bioavailalbe to you once the plant is harvested. also add it to your soil.

i don't understand why you are not growing directly in the soil. is your friend giving you a paved over spot to use? why can't you just plant in the garden? if the garden itself is not doable, then get the deepest containers you can, at least 6 inches deep or deeper. the deeper the container the longer the roots and the healthier the grass. earthen containers are best, but also heavy and expensive.

tending the plants twice a week is just fine. other plants require more care, grass is hardy and tough, it does not need babying.

also when you first plant the sprouts the birds will go crazy for them. you might want to cover over with a screen or something. once they take root that is no longer a problem.

i think i left some questions unaswered but thats it for now.
