i believe thayer to be the definitive lexicographer of new testament greek, in spite of his unitarian bias.

for the lay person, no finer work can be had than w.e. vines greek dictionary. written as a commentary and based on the words in the king james, the research and scholarship he brings to understanding the scriptures is astounding in its accuracy and its courage. his work on the word "cross" alone is worth buying several copies of the book and giving some away to friends. no library should be without that or fox's book of martyrs, among others.

Topic: Antichrist

Antichristos can mean either "against Christ" or "instead of Christ," or perhaps, combining the two, "one who, assuming the guise of Christ, opposes Christ" (Westcott). The word is found only in John's epistles, (a) of the many "antichrists" who are forerunners of the "Antichrists" himself, 1 John 2:18,22; 2 John 1:7; (b) of the evil power which already operates anticipatively of the "Antichrist," 1 John 4:3.

What the Apostle says of him so closely resembles what he says of the first beast in Rev. 13, and what the Apostle Paul says of the Man of Sin in 2 Thess. 2, that the same person seems to be in view in all these passages, rather than the second beast in Rev. 13, the false prophet; for the latter supports the former in all his Antichristian assumptions.

now, of course you are not going to find a work that says "anti" in "antichrist" means mirror image. that is the definition that my friend came up with as a practical means of describing its use. what else is "opposite to" and can be used "in place of"? you do it every day, using your reflection "instead of" looking directly at yourself.

this concept is nothing new. i have heard preachers use the analogy of a store, one that sells hamburgers for example, and they are the best made of the finest ingredients. another store sets up shop right beside it and looks as clean and inviting on the outside and the product they sell looks and smells and tastes every bit as good as the other. but while the one is selling the finest ingredients, the other is selling inferior ingredients enhanced to fool the senses. the end result to the body is not the same, yet the difference is not immediately discerned. maybe that was ray krocs preacher, who knows?

the point is that there is nothing overt about the antichrist. "he" would fool even the elect, if that were possible.

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

so why cant the elect be deceived? because they have had experience with the real deal. just like i have had silver salmon pulled right out of prince william sound and perfectly saute'd on the spot. nothing else compares. i would know if pf changs used something else besides wild alskan salmon in their dishes. in kansas city, they use the real deal, btw.

i could go on about the meaning. for example, strongs says it is often used to show contrast. well, if you are having to contrast something in literature, that means that the comparitive similarities must be glaring in order to warrant such a treatment. i think you get the picture.
