We put them up on pedestals. We want them to
know the answers we seek. I still feel that way.
In many cases, we feel they are the only ones
standing between us and DEATH~! And surely, I
was glad to have a doctor assist in the birth
of my child. I would have been one of those who
died in childbirth if he had not been there.

I still love doctors, but am pickier in choosing
them. I have a better understanding that they
should be people who HELP me deal with my health
issues and so my expectations are MUCH more realistic
which is probably better for all my patient-doctor
relationships. I no longer use one on a yearly
basis but enjoy my naturopath and my chiropractor
and my dentist and see them as people who can
help me keep healthy or put my bones back where
they belong. If I break a bone, I sure do not want
my friend twisting on me on the kitchen table and
me sucking down a fifth of whiskey, although trust
me, she could do it...ggg. I now see it as my
responsibility to become educated in the risks
of what I put in my mouth, as well as the benefits
and weigh them against whatever other options I
may have. I trust myself now that I am older to
stand up and not blindly accept any doctors opinion.

Now, if only some doctors would drop their egos at
the door and put on their coats of compassion and
empathize with our needs and concerns on a more
personalized level. My acupuncturist once told me,
doctors have ways to treat people but even though
we all are similar, everyone has little differences.
Our bodies do not match the idealized pictures we
may see in Grey's Anatomy. Likewise, he said, I was
part of 10% of the population that doctors can use
all their tricks on and I would still die and they
would scratch their heads and say, one for the book.
In reality though, it would take another school of
thinking, of treating the body, in my case, through
the electrical system, to jumpstart the healing
process. I learned from him that if you do not find
help looking at the problem one way, MOVE~! look
at it and find another doctor who will look at it
in a different way. Unfortunately, allopathic doctors
often have to put on blinders because they are so
mainstream and are boxed in by liability issues.

Learning how our bodies operate and *feel* is a process
too. I am sure people like you and me had to learn
more quickly than others that we had to trust our
best instincts and reject the *norm* because in
reality, there isn't~!

blessings,
Zoe
