As always, I agree with you. I agree that taking a break from iodine is a good idea. It's clear that the body is not meant to have it constantly - otherwise the thyroid would not have the ability to scavenge and concentrate it.
Edema is often related to sodium retention, kidney function, and blood zeta potential. I'd consider supplementing some KCl, or else spironolactone, but only on a short-term basis as the spiro will cause sodium loss & one doesn't want to go too far with things, else risk cardio issues. I'd opt for the KCl as it would cause efflux of Na by a more natural route.
The body makes itself acidic at times, for very good reasons. Those who try to drink caustic substances to alter their "body pH" are fighting nature. In the case of parasite infesttion, the body actually makes itself more acidic because it helps fight the larvae when the immunoglobulin G is inhibited by the proteases that the little larvae emit. And more people have parasites than realize they do.
