I have been waiting for the release of a product called Buffergel. It is something that has been in studies for the last 10 years or so for a method of birth control and they have found it to be successful. They are now testing it as a preventative for STD's and BV as well. It is supposed to be used with a diaphragm but I think with repeated use it would replenish the good bacteria. It is a gel that contains the particular strain of hydrogen-peroxide producing lactobaccilus that is responsible for maintaining the acidic ph of the vagina. When sperm (and menstruation) are introduced into the vaginal environment the ph is raised, or alkalized, for up to 48 hours after sex and I guess at least a week while you're menstruating. The buffergel would keep the vaginal environment acidic thereby preventing pregnancy and a number of other problems and STD's. The reason why you catch these STD's during sex is because of the alkalizing effect of the semen, your body's natural defense against "intruders" is gone during that time allowing for reproduction. If your body's defense system is weakened by Antibiotic over-use and poor diet or poor lifestyle choices then maybe those good bacteria can't re-establish themselves. My one question would be when buffergel is finally introduced for public use if the lactobaccillus would be able to re-colonize themselves in the vagina, if so it will be a cure.... if not, it would be another treatment option.
