My mother died of ovarian cancer in 1977, thirty years this October. It cost over a quarter of a million dollars, probably closer to a half million, for her to die. Most of this was paid by insurance. The degree of her suffering is the stuff of nightmares. If the cost of treatment has gone up more than seven times since, the cost for her to die in less than two years would be in excess of $3,ooo,ooo today. The sad thing is that she was misdiagnosed for over four years while her doctor told her to come in and get a hysterectomy to get rid of the symptoms that brought her to him. He never thought past a heavyset woman going through a difficult menopause. The surgeries, chemo and drugs did little good, but I blame our good old family doctor for being the root cause of her death. Fifteen years later he helped usher my dad to an early death by misdiagnosing his heart problems.
