yes my daughter is caught up in that. She is a highly educated person with a masters degree in foreign policy and a lawyer - She was a human rights worker for years in Bosnia and now she is a legal aid lawyer in New York because she refuses to go into the corporate scene and wants to use her education for purposes of helping others. We have the biggest prison system in the world, with the largest number of incarcerated persons in the western world....and it is mostly populated by non-violent criminals a lot of whom are in there for drug possession or robberies and overwhelmingly are black and latino.  a curious state of affairs and for what?

Read the article by Daniel Lazare in the latest issue of the Nation "Stars and Bars. " An amazing issue actually - I've read it cover to cover.

But I'm going off topic here - thing is she makes so little money defending people who can't afford a lawyer and is living on $14.00 a day because of her student loans and has had to move into a tiny flat to be able to afford her rent.

But she loves her job....
