Hi!
"It is thought that helminths produce molecules that trigger a response in regulatory cells (similar to the one that prevents autoimmunity), which tricks the body into switching off the response that would otherwise kill the parasites.
AND YET THE DR WILL TEST US FOR THE PRESENCE OF THE ANTIBODIES. It is like saying that 1+1=3 and you will be called crazy if you say 2!"
> And WHO is the delusional one in this scenario? :)
"If that is the case, then infections could be cured, not by vaccination or drug treatment, but by reactivating the immune system. It is the first time such a concept has been explored to curb the tropical diseases caused by helminths - such as filariasis and schistosomiasis - which affect one in four of the global population."
Reactivation of the immune system -> what a lovely phrase.
> This would be a nice concept if the immune system wasn't in complete disarray by the time parasites are discovered. However, parasite invasion (worms, fungi, etc) is now being found individuals who's immune system was not compromised or weakened. These tricky little buggers slip in without being noticed and trick the system to live in symbiosis. The real question would be how do we get the immune system to recognize a HARMFUL invader so that it can do its job of getting rid of the problem before the buggers get to comfy?
Darn, gotta go! :(
Thanks for stopping by! :)
