Mineral depletion of foods raised in commercial soils and in the case of livestock, raised in commercial environments was recognized well before the 1930's and the problem presented to congress, along with the warning of impending degenerative diseases if not addressed, in 1936; if I remember correctly.
Food is only as good as the soil it is grown in... this includes herbs and anything else for that matter. Livestock is only as good as the food it eats and the environment it is raised in. Man is only as good (healthy) as his internal terrain and external environment, which as we all know, is progressively getting worse.
There is a great deal of strong evidence that indicates a lack of macro and trace minerals in food is at the root of the incredible increase in degenerative diseases. While I believe strongly that lifestyle and pollution of all kinds plays various rolls in these diseases as well, I have come to believe that adequate (not mega dosing) mineral intake cannot only help to buffer the somewhat uncontrollable environmental influences we face and the controllable lifestyle choices we make, they can also, along with positive lifestyle changes, help to clean, correct and then heal our bodies of these degenerative diseases.
I have been, and am doing it and will continue to for the rest of my life. I supplement with variations of the alkalizing drink from the Ask Moreless forum, and tri-salts. I use green foods, chlorella, spirulina, wheat grass and various other things from time to time, such as E3 Live, and Terramin clay. Never using all of them every day... I kind of feel what I need now and go by instincts.
I also use variations on the alkalizing baths. In addition I use herbs and various teas etc. I also grow and purchase the best herbs. spices, and foods I can find, including free range meats, using a refractometer on produce to check quality. Everything is locally grown/raised if at all possible.
My chiropractor used to adjust me 3 - 4 times a week... now once a week, and often there is no adjustment to make. Arthritic conditions in joints have disappeared and I no longer have arthritic joint issues etc. etc. (knee issues from surgeries... another story). I am more flexible, more active and healthier than I have been in years... I was recently called the "human hulk" by a doctor a few weeks back due to my incredible muscle development over the course of the last few years; I am 51.
Based upon my experience, Arthritis appears to be a lack of absorbable minerals in the diet.
What do I mean by absorbable? If one does not have a healthy gut, including lots of beneficial symbiotic bacteria required to absorb nourishment from high quality mineral rich foods, the body will begin to degenerate.
One could swallow all the minerals one could stand and absorb little, and receive little to no benefit (perhaps do harm), if the gut is not in prime working order from mouth to anus. One could also absorb various forms of minerals that may, or may not offer a greater benefit than another, or do more harm than good. Synthetic pharmaceutical minerals come to mind.
This is one reason why bowel cleansing and Liver Flushing may be so beneficial to many... cleansing and re-priming the gut.
We could also get into the whole food supplement issue... which has been addressed many times. I side with the whole food and/or whole food supplement if needed, being ideal... some benefit may be realized by an isolated supplement, however, isolated supplements have absorbability issues I will not get into here. In addition, isolated supplements can cause systemic imbalances in other minerals/elements.
A healthy gut and digestion (which includes chewing your food till liquid) and re-mineralizing with whole, high quality, mineral rich foods is key, and explains why people, when they make efforts to greatly improve the quality of their foods AND have already or, as part of the process, develop a healthy gut, begin to heal and see improvements where there were none before.
I have seriously considered effective micro-organisms and may still give them a whirl soon...
