CLOFAZIMINE (Lamprene®) is an antiinfective medicine. It kills a certain kind of bacteria that causes leprosy (Hansen's disease). Clofazimine also reduces inflammation caused by the disease. Generic clofazimine capsules are not yet available.

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•black, tarry stools
•dark yellow or brown urine
•depression
•dry, burning or itching eyes
•stomach pain
•yellowing of the eyes or skin
•unusual tiredness or weakness

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•diarrhea
•dry, scaly skin
•increased sensitivity to the sun or ultraviolet light
•nausea, vomiting
•pink to brownish-black color of skin, urine, tears, saliva, perspiration or stools
•skin rash, itching

Contact your prescriber or health care professional if you get severe stomach pain or diarrhea, or if you get black, tarry stools; do not treat yourself.

This medicine can color your skin, nails, and hair from pink to brownish-black. This color will last for as long as you take clofazimine and is not a cause for alarm. Talk to your prescriber or health care professional about this if it causes you concern or makes you feel depressed. Clofazimine can also color soft contact lens.

If you get dry and scaly skin, you can relieve it by applying oil.

Keep out of the sun, or wear protective clothing outdoors and use a sunscreen. Do not use sun lamps or sun tanning beds or booths.
