We have a lot of snails around, too, especially with all the wet weather here, I would imagine. I don't know - is there a surplus of snails with wet weather? It seems to correlate with the increase in mosquitos and flies.

I haven't heard of poisonous snails. There could be numerous explanations for your son's rash...and it just might drive you a bit nuts trying to figure it out! I know my mind particularly enjoys the show...at my expense!!
