Wow F...thank you so much. That made my day.
Looking at a piece of art that speaks to you is like a wet dream.
What is art, anyway? Took a semester class in school on that very subject. It's one of those age old questions, like "What is moral?" "Is war innate in man?" ....
After debating furiously about art for over a month, I began to believe that art is truly in the eye of the beholder. It's like wine. A box wine could be the nectar of the gods for some. You simply cannot say "this wine is not good".
Now, what is it about one piece of art that would cause it to be sold for multi-millions? A history of people that looked at that art and had their breath taken away. Some things are universal. How many people can look at a Rembrandt, Vermeer, Fra Angelico, Bruegel, Miro, Dali, Thiebaud or sculptures by Rodin or Michaelangelo or Brancuzzi and not have some reaction? A universal reaction. Perhaps it's the way these artists stimulate the brain?
Of course the engineer looks at a CAD drawing and finds art and beauty. The architect, a building. The corporate enthusiast, a well engineered presentation. A mathematician, a challenging theorem. But this is individual art, very personal beauty. Not shared universally, but no less important.
Ah, but that public beauty. The reason that people from all backgrounds and all walks of life go to the Louvre. I guarantee that the vast majority of those visitors find that one piece of art that makes them stop and stare, perhaps in awe.
If I could buy every piece of Dutch or Flemish art in the world and set up my own museum that I lived in, I would never tire of it. I would set up my bed in front of Bruegels. I'd eat my breakfast in front of Vermeers, I'd bathe in front of Peter Paul Rubens.....Oh yes, if I only had a gazillion dollars....(but I would share *wink*)
