Sometimes I think that one can be so incredibly deficient in something that they MUST take it slow in the beginning.
I'm thinking of times like when we are dehydrated. In the military, they taught (the males in my family) about the dangers of drinking water too fast. After the long hikes and marches, the body would become terribly dehydrated, and the urge to "suck down the water in massive quantities" was terribly strong. The soldiers were warned against doing that, because it could cause convulsions(?)...
Dad couldn't remember exactly what he was told, but he did have an instance where he was so hot and thirsty that he "sucked down" a bunch of water when the water was finally made available for him.
He felt so incredibly awful he thought he was going to die. He said that, too: "I thought I was going to die; I doubled over in cramps."
I also remember a "Little House on the Prairie" episode. One of the kids had to run like the wind during a heatwave to "fetch" the doctor for someone. The doctor arrived in time for the patient, but they showed a scene where the doctor told the "runner" that it was VERY important that he take at least a half an hour to drink the water...any faster than that would be dangerous.
So, I'm wondering the same thing about iodine. Perhaps some people are just so incredibly deficient in it that it could be quite dangerous for them to start taking high doses from day one.
I'm not saying to not take high doses! Just work yourself UP to the higher doses, gradually, over time!
Because I used to have heart problems, this has proven true for me as well.
