I happened to see a post on another forum stating that the use of elemental Iodine killed all the good bacteria in the gut and was responsible for constipation among many of us purple hazers. While I can't speak for everybody here, I can say that this has not been the case for me, in fact just the opposite is true.

Since my accident in November of 2005 I have had to deal with chronic constipation. After going into a wheelchair just over a year ago things have become worse. Nerve damage and inactivity are both responsible. It got so bad I was having to use Epsom Salt twice a week just to "go" at all. Since beginning with Lugol's the constipation has ended and I am regular and much more comfortable than I have been in years. I don't pretend to know how and why the Iodine has solved this problem, but it has been another little miracle for me. I feel my overall digestion has been enhanced since starting on Lugols.

I generally take around 50-75 mg of the Lugol's. I feel this is plenty for me right now. I was taking the Iodine with kelp, but after reading about how kelp is the ocean's garbage collector and traps all kinds of heavy metals and toxins like petroleum before it enters the ocean's food chain makes me leery of taking too large a dose of kelp. Mercury, arsenic and petrochemicals are only a few of the toxic waste materials that have been found contaminating kelp. Hopefully, not all kelp used for supplements is so full of contaminants that it becomes unsafe to consume, but I don't want to take any chances.

Another thing I have done that has seemed to help is quit all calcium supplements. I eat plenty of broccoli and cantaloupes that are both very high in plant based calcium, but no more rock minerals for me. Calcium tends to tense muscles while magnesium relaxes them. Apparently this also applies to the peristalsis of the colon. There are probably a lot of things working together that have helped me, but I truly believe that iodine in the form of Lugol's solution has played a major part.

I really don't want to stir up a lot of controversy, but on the other hand, I do not want to see newcomers scared away from iodine supplementation. It might just be one of the best things you can do for your health.
