Well, perhaps the power of seeing-is-believing in this case is not as powerful as I had imagined or hoped, at least, maybe not enough so to overcome the power of long & ongoing conditioned behavior. And yes, I can imagine there is a downer/rebound effect that starts something like "what magic pill are you taking that I too can take, where do I buy it, how much does it cost?", only to have their enthusiams deflated with "what? I gotta learn a bunch of new, foreign stuff?, AND I need to make all kinds of adjustments to all kinds of presently-engrained diet/lifestyle habits?"
About a year ago I first stumbled on to this woman that goes by Dr. Mom. By conventional terms, she's not a doctor (IE> no corresponding sheepskins, not even a post hole digger!) but is a proven healer & occasional life saver, after a fashion, with various skills, to include those of an old-fashioned mid-wife who has a fairly deep arsenal of knowledge & experience using herbs as medicine. She's had a lot of hands-on practice from having raised many (7?) of her own children, and many grandchildren, nieces, cousins, friends, friends of friends and such. Dr. Mom told of her own mother who had adopted the attitude over the years "your my daughter and I love you dearly, but I want nothing to do with this nature-healing stuff you practice". Dr. Mom described how her mom, in her advanced-years, had become such a conditioned prescription-meds pill popper that she got to the point of not being able to leave home without taking her little scrip/bag 'o pills along with her. Anyway, along with her advancing years (in her 60s or early 70s) Dr. Mom's mother had also accumulated accumulted various illnesses/disease, one or more daily pills for each, including a rapidly increasingly osteo-arthritis that eventually put her in bed unable to stand/walk due to the pain. It was at this point Dr Mom coined the phrase to the effect "a person becoming bedridden in and of itself really changes the dynamics of what that person will allow themselves to be open to, to be a "receptive audience" to. With this particular window of opportunity having opened, Dr. Mom then began an aggressive albeit simple therapy - Comfrey. She would soak her mother's body in hot Comfrey baths several times daily - literally making a giant tea bag out of Comfrey and then dunking it into a full, hot bath tub while then placing her mother into said tub. She also gave Comfrey internally, in the form of tea to drink, several times daily. Dr. Mom claims that within 2 weeks, her previusly frail mother was up, out of bed, ambulatory, and within another 2 weeks was back to her normal self IE> able to freely leave the house under her own power to go here, there, wherever AND the load on her pill bag had already become a bit lightened. Dr. Mom would eventually get her off BP meds (another story, complicated, in itself) and I believe most if not all other prescription meds. All in all, a pretty good success story that becomes possible if/when one can find a receptive audience, even an audience of 1.
