So I had my dental check up the other day, and I am devastated! I have had no problems with my teeth lately. No pain. No discomfort. Everything seemed to be going along just fine. In my mind the check up was a formality. Boy was I wrong.
When I opened my mouth the dentist (who is not my usual dentist BTW), said, "what lovely teeth you have", and then proceeded to find a problem with every single one in my mouth. Even though it has only been 12 months since my last visit (and with no pain what-so-ever remember) he informs me that I need 4 filling, a crown, and a clean! I couldn't believe it!
So I had the clean. Don't even get me started on that. I was in the chair for almost an hour and it was so incredibly painful I don't ever intend to go through that again. That night I was awoken a 3am spitting up blood clots and it took me an hour to get the bleeding to stop. I tried everything. In the end I put a drop of Lugols on my finger and painted my gums with it. It was the only thing that stopped the bleeding.
As for the 4 fillings and the crown, my husband believes that this particular dentist was more interested in making money than in the welfare of my mouth. He also told my husband that he needed a crown and various other things. My husband, my son and myself all had check ups and a clean and it cost us $500, and that was out of pocket, after the health insurance paid their bit.
On the positive side - 3 of the filling that he wants to do are to fill holes underneath already existing amalgams. This actually made me happy. I wanted to have them replaced but my husband wasn't going to let me unless I had a better reason than, "because curezone told you too".
And has anyone else ever heard of Piksters. They are these little stick like things that look kind of like pipe cleaners and they are for cleaning instead of flossing. Well the dentist gave us 4 packets of them in varying sizes and charged us $22 a packet for the privilege. And speaking of over charging. They also wanted to give me a fluoride treatment after my clean and charge me $27 for my trouble. I politely declined. But then came the hard sell for a product known as Peroxl, which is a peroxide mouth rinse. I wasn't even game enough to ask how much that cost. I just told them I already brush with peroxide and bi-carb (baking soda) and if I needed peroxide mouth wash I would make my own.
