Fiber is the last thing you should turn to if you are already constipated. Fiber helps prevent constipation when used with adequate water intake, but once you become constipated it can make the situation worse.
Constipation usually begins with stool drying out and becoming hardened in the descending colon, in particular the rectum and sigmoid. It essentially forms a plug that prevents stool from passing from above and being eliminated. When you ingest fiber in this situation, it swells in volume in contact with water and you start to get bloating in the transverse and ascending sections of the colon that leads to discomfort when waste matter can't continue it's normal transit through the lower colon.
At this point the only way to obtain relief is to remove the plug of dried and hardened waste that caused the backup. The recommendation by #37380 is the one that will give you the safest and most natural effective relief - enemas.
Just don't use the Fleet chemical disposable type that are available in pharmacies and supermarkets. The old fashioned enema bag is a time tested tradition in natural health care and will provide reliable relief.
If you haven't used cleansing enemas in the past, or if you would like more information just follow up here.
