Hey there,
I had been a chronic lip biter throughout high school, and a few months into my freshman year at college developed E.C. I've gone through a lot because of it -- i've tried countless amounts of treatments (probably spent over $150 total on different stuff - l-lysine, hydrocortisone, wheatgrass, tons of different antifungals and lip balms). I also have gone through a lot of emotional and social stress because of it. I know how bad it can be, looking for mirrors constantly, going to the bathroom often just to check your lips, wondering if people are looking at your mouth, being careful while eating, etc.
My condition was very similiar to what many of you described. Every 2 or 3 days the center of my bottom lip would start to crack, and then after another day I would have to completely peel off the skin of my bottom lip. Like a snake's skin or something. It wasn't all of my bottom lip, it was the top half of it. It would appear red and kinda irritated, if I took a picture with flash of my lips immediately after I exfoliated they would look completely red where it peeled, like I had lipstick on or something. In addition to that, I also sometimes experienced my lips getting white and peely after drinking or eating.
The summer after my freshmen year at school I was having a really good summer. Working a social job I really liked and having a good time with my friends. Half way through the summer my lips started getting better...They weren't completely normal, they were slightly harder than normal lips and sometimes look chapped in a weird way, but they werent outrageous. During the time they were healing I wasnt taking or doing anything different than normal. Just taking my multi-vitamin (GNC Ultra Mega). I think it really had to do with my body being in a good state of mind and my body wanting to heal and be positive just as my mind was doing :)
I returned to college for my sophmore year, and within days of getting there I was really stressed out, and my lips were getting kinda weirdly chapped, and instead of just applying a little lip balm and waiting it out to look normal like i would over the summer, I sort of forced a peel out of them and my condition returned. :(. It really sucked. I was then on a search for my ointments/techniques I could use to get rid of it. I tried more products but nothing worked well.
Towards the end of my sophmore year I started Oil Pulling after reading about it on the CZ forums. It helped slow down the cycle and make the exfloation easier. It also made my teeth A LOT whiter. I still had to exfoliate every 4 or 5 days though, but it wasnt really that bad. I also started taking Hyaluronic Acid (derived from chicken sternum cartilage) that I bought at Whole Foods. I took it two times a day in addition to the oil pulling.
After the end of my sophmore year I couldnt keep up with the pulling, but continued to take the Hyaluronic Acid, but only once a day. I also was having a good time with my friends and feeling really good about life in general. My lips slowly started healing again, and I'm back to the point where I was summer after freshmen year I described above. I DO NOT have a peeling cycle. They feel kinda close to normal and the skin feels way better attached. When I run my finger over my lips a few times, half the time little flakes of skin fall off, but its very manageable and only niceable when not running my fingers over them. Sometimes after I eat they seem slightly white, but nothing noticeable to anyone else. Sometimes after I drink portions of my lips will turn a little white and slimey, but not that noticeably, and I can pick off small white soft portions of my lips extremely easily and my lips are not red and irritated under them. My lips have been like this for a month or two and it's awesome. I plan on never forcing a hard peel on them, because I feel like they really are healing and will one day be compeltely normal.
So, that's my story, my advice to you guys would be:
- DEFINITELY try buying Hyaluronic Acid from Chicken Cartilage. I buy mine at Whole Foods. You can see the kind I get here:
http://www.webvitamins.com/product.aspx?id=20708&wvaid=IN&term=froogle
- DEFINITELY take a multivitamin. Pref. with B12 and iron. Here's the one I take:

- MAYBE try oil pulling. I dont know if this had an effect on anything, but either way its an interesting thing to try, and worst off your teeth will just get whiter ;)
- USE natural toothpaste without fluoride. I failed to mention it in above, but when i started oil pulling I also started strictly using Tom's natural toothpaste
- ABSOLUTELY try to feel good and positive about life. Your mind and body are
connected more than you ever know, and I really feel that my happiness and feeling of wellbeing are directly correlated to my skin starting to heal.
Good luck everyone and let me know if the Hyaluronic Acid helps. I hope more people can get to where I am, even if it just a step and not the complete solution. I will keep people updated if I end up healing completely.
