You can approach it 2 ways, Toxnomore. You can call the AA office and ask if they could do a 12-Step Call for you: a couple of AA volunteers will come see you, talk to you, and meet you at one of the local meetings. Or, you can call the AA office and show up. My mom chose the former because it was such a scary step for her. Years later, she became a 12-Step volunteer and substance abuse counselor, God bless her.
Yeah, it's scary, but the minute that you walk into the meeting, you'll be welcomed in such a manner as you've never experienced in your life. All of your misgivings will disappear and you'll feel an emotion that you've likely never experienced, either: unconditional love. These folks don't care who you are, what your level of income is, where you live, what your pedigree is, or how many stupid things you've ever done. They are there to support you every step of the way to your recovery.
Give a call, this afternoon, and check out a meeting tonight. Go to as many meetings as you can and, within time, you'll find your "Home Group" where you are comfortable. Post back your feelings and experiences for others who are considering taking the same steps.
God bless you!
