I agree Black&gold, stay away from “Near Beer” or anything like it. I would add Rum Balls and any other food that contains alcohol. Also add mouthwash that contains alcohol to that list. That is just smart thinking.

One question one might want to ask someone who was contemplating a faux beer or two is why? Why in the hell would you want to drink something that looks like a beer, smells like a beer, pours like a beer and tastes like a beer if you are an alcoholic?

When we talk about recovery from alcoholism, our motives must be looked at very closely. We have some screwy motives at times. And we are fully capable of burying a selfish, self centered, fearful and destructive motive under a seemingly benign one. Like I just enjoyed the taste of a cold beer. That’s all, I am just after the taste.

I have my doubts about that. We drank for the effect, the alcoholic buzz, not the taste. Normal people may drink a glass of wine for it’s fruity flavor or finish, but not the alcoholic. We drink for oblivion. That is our motive, to change our outlook through the buzz and to change it fast. And a Near beer is just the first step on the way back out the door of recovery.

What do I REALLY want, that is the question I need to ask myself. Not what I want you to think I want, but what I really in my heart of hearts want.

Here is wishing all of you sober and sane motives, just for today.

Richard
