My feeling is, although I cannot be sure, that you were forgiven because you wanted to be forgiven and because you really wanted to live a better life.
There is a world of difference between understanding someone who wants to be understood and who really cares, although may not know how, and a person who doesn't care and doesn want to be understood.
That relationship will only become salvagable if he (and she) shows determination in living a happy and responsible life. A few empty promises here and there are worth nothing.
You might've given an empty promise at some point, but I am sure you will find that ultimately your change came about because you wanted it (and with help of some loving people too). Your change didn't happen because you didn't want it (which is what her husband is doing - showing he doesn't want any change).
