'Is it any of my business what he did while he was away from the house?'
It most cerainly is as long as you were legally married and committed to the relationship.

"Should I have given up on him so easily?"
It's not giving up, it's called surrendering to truth: he is in such deep denial about his addictions that he is refusing to engage in therapy and it will never get better until he owes a Bookie more money than he can afford to pay back and have his legs broken, your home shot up, or end up murdered over a stupid gambling debt. What more are you willing to endure? How much more trauma, stress, fear, anxiety, and fury are you willing to endure to continue trying to save the Titanic?

"He wants us to be together, and claims that every marriage is rocky in the beginning, and claims that one day we would look back on this and laugh, is he right?"
No, he is not right - he hasn't been "right" at any time during your marriage. His choices of behavior and financial decisions are based upon deception and feeding his addictions.

"What should I do?"
What do YOU think you should do?

You are welcome to email me if you wish. You have my prayers and most sincere best wishes.
