I heard the thing about being dipped in heated water but didn't make the connection.
Sorry, you should indeed see a cloud rise above the tooth, but I doubt it would get above 1/4 inch from the tooth.
Then the cloud shoud fall like a rock!
It's called specific gravity.
Even though mercury is indeed excited (heated) by UV it's not going to affect the specific gravity.
A good example of this is a miner's table in which lead shot is used as a filter.
Gold drops below the layer of lead shot while anything lighter floats on top.
The key here is I have no doubt this "test" didn't work until he got the idea of heating the tooth.
An easy verification test is to heat the tooth in an oven well beyond body temp then do the UV. I can tell you without doing it, it will fail.
