"Total wastes, excluding wastewater, exceed 50 trillion pounds a year in the United States."
I will not debate which is worse... I do not think there are any winners here :-(

"DuPont also operates four underground injection wells, which shoot toxic waste into the earth at a depth of around two miles."
Most often the plume maps go out to, and under, agricultural areas.
The bad part is that waste moves through the earth and soils... some faster than others.

quite honestly we are a global toxic waste dump...
I studied this stuff back in college... the soil was a rising concern then to the point of developing majors to deal with the hazardous waste and toxicity of soils.
While the maps on these superfund sites (by state) pinpoint the problem... what they do not illustrate is the plume that runs out from the point of the problem... sometimes fanning out hundreds of square miles and into ground water.

Look up superfund sites in your state and try to find the plume maps...
Plume definition - Ecology A space in air, water, or soil containing pollutants released from a point source.
