It doesn't surprise me in the least. I recall reading an interview of the FDA whistleblower of Vioxx--- how they warned him beforehand that his interests in the FDA were supposed to be for the economic good and not soley for public welfare.

I don't recall the exact way they put it to him, but it was very clear what they meant. Shocked and dissillusioned, he couldnt believe his ears . After he blew the whistle, he was socially ostracized from his peers at the FDA-- and professionally harrassed.

Some in the FDA in the lower rungs are sincere -- but the more on top of the ladder rung , the more corruption there is.
