My sister lived in Kobe for 4 years and said it is also from the amount of pickled foods that they eat. Pickled stuff is supposed to be a big no-no. Also, I do recall when I was a girl seeing a Life magazine that had a long article about the extremely high levels of mercury in the waters there. The pictures of the sick people stood out so much to me as a youngster that I never forgot them.
