Prozac and other SSRI drugs have relatively few side effects the most common being the sexual dysfunction part. The dangerous part about them is that for severely depressed people, who have thoughts of suicide, they are SO low that they don't want to do anything, including the actual suicide attempt. Anything that lifts their mood over time, like the SSRIs, will gradually improve their mood to the point that they're still depressed, but not quite THAT deep that they can't even move. Think of a number line, with positive numbers being happy and negative numbers being sad. If you're -1000 you probably won't commit suicide, whereas if you're like -100 you're more at risk. Another problem is that sometimes people with Depression who get drugs are actually bipolar patients who just haven't had that manic episode yet, so the drugs kickstart them past just getting back to baseline and get them to +10000 which leads to problems with behavior, impulsivity, violence, etc.
