It's not really a fear of having people say, "I told you so," that should be the core of any decision that you make - making decisions that are healthy to your Self should be the focus. Those choices which will benefit your inner strength, your education, and your physical/emotional health are the ones that will make a positive, lifelong path for you to follow.
As for being your bf's "guidance counselor," please, be very wary of this. I also played the "open ear" and source of support for my ex. He wove the most pitiful, sad, and harsh stories about his life as a child and, being the naive and trusting boob that I was, I believed that this "wonderful" person had been dealt such a cruel hand as a child. Oh, lordy - once I divorced him (after nearly 15 years of unspeakable abuse), I learned the truths of his past. The truths were 180 degrees from what he had told me and the things that he chose to do all made sense, once I learned what really happened.
You'll be just fine, especially if you set your sights on a worthy goal (like, earning your Master's Degree in Microbiology, Business, Ceramics, or SOMETHING that you love), work hard, and attain that goal for your Self. Best wishes to you!
