Plants also serve another function(s):
They also are 'Soil Indicators' and 'Soil Accumulators'. By noting what plants you have growing wild you can tell what minerals are missing in you landscape, and by corollary, every plant accumulates particular minerals. So by encouraging plants to grow (and addingthe appropiate ingredient) for the missing spectra from your 'indicators' your soil will be rejuvenated and up to speed faster.
Also, noting what is missing from your 'Indicators' and adding the appropriate 'Accumulator' plants to your compost and mulches you are another step ahead.
Its funny with modern Allopathic medicine that most "weeds" are in fact Medicinal.
NOTE: There is no word in the Japanese that translates to the Modern English 'Weed'.
But there is 'undesirables' for the garden and around the house...
You can also go in the reverse with the naming of plants. Any Latin ending in officinale/is has a tradition of medicinal use in Europe. Any common name ending in
-wort has a traditional use in the British Isles for domestic and/or medicinal use.
