Here is what I believe to be one of the best articles on the subject, below. I hope you enjoy it.

"This synthesis, involving four enzymes, is illustrated in Fig 2. Man has the first three enzymes in his liver but it is the missing fourth enzyme, which completely blocks the liver production of ascorbic acid."
