yes i did study this awhile ago, basically its to do with a region of the brain in the hypothalamus called the adipostat that acts as a memory/thermostat for body fat.

i agree that exercise is important, not just for weight loss but for overall health, but i just dont agree with dieting. its far better to eat more often and eat healthier food, people think that if they only eat 1 or 2 meals a day they will loose weight but this actually makes it harder to loose weight because your body goes into starvation mode unsure when it will recieve its next meal so it holds onto fat, because you have lowered your metabolism.

if you ask anyone experienced with healthy eating they will say its far better to eat 4-5 small meals throughout the day as this raises your metabolism and your body has no need to hold onto fat (it takes around 3 hours to digest a meal so 4-5 meals a day is ideal, and dont snack between meals) anerobic exercise such as weight lifting is important because muscle takes alot of energy to maintain and raises your metabolism, so the more muscle you have the more energy you will use to maintain it and you will even be burning fat while you sleep. this doesnt mean you have to have buldging muscles it just means you need to incorporate weights into your exercise regime, lifting weights will also strengthen your bones and prevent osteoporosis later in life. many people find that they dont begin to loose weight even though they were doing lots of cardio until they took up weights, oprha is a good example of how to loose weight look at what type of exercise she does and how often.

another general rule when eating is not to mix protein and carbohydrates, also known as food combining, you can look this up but in general when you eat protein your body secretes acids and bases/alkaline when you eat carbohydrates. so if you eat protein and carbohydrates together your body secretes acid and alkaline juices which essentially cancel each other out making the food difficult and longer to digest, giving you a bloated and lazy feeling after a meal.

you need to cut out Sugar and white flour too as these will make you fat by raising insulin levels, so avoid any diet drinks as these just have another type of Sugar in them. same goes for diet foods, infact the whole diet industry is basically just a big con designed to make money, people fall for it because often their only source of information comes from advertisers who are trying to sell them stuff, stay away from anything 'diet' it simply doesnt work.

you asked about people who have dieted/fasted and kept of the weight, well actually you will find that most these people, especially those who have fasted didnt actually keep off the weight they lost, but put it straight back on after the fast. it is true that some people will starve themselfs and eat hardly anything but this isnt healthy and very few people have the discipline to continue this for any length of time, usually these people are models, but for the average person who uses food as a comfort, starvation rarely works in the long term even though you may see good results short term, as soon as your 'diet' ends you will most likely regain the weight plus a little extra. this is where the term yo-yo dieting comes from, as people end a diet, gain weight again, diet again, and the pattern continues.

sucessful 'dieters' will tend to eat healthy food, eat frequently and exercise, avoiding junk foods such as sugars and cutting down on meats. the book burn the fat feed the muscle is an excellent book which talks about loosing weight successfully long term, its also worth reading how ophra lost her weight.
