Lasagna gardening is when you pile layers of different organic materials on top of the ground where you are going to garden. Best to start in the fall, but you can start now too.

-If you have alot of organic material: layer them, things like leaves, hay, straw, pine straw, wood shavings, manure, compost, sawdust, ect. Whatever you have, lay it on thick. Have all your layers go about 1 ft high off the ground if you can. At least six inches.

-If you don't have so much organic material: Start with newspaper, put down a few layers, then put your layer(s) on top of that. When plant, push back whatever you have on top of your newspaper, poke a hole through the newspaper and plant.

If you start right now, you should go with the newspaper method, because the huge amount of organic material in the first option will not be broken down when you plant. What you might do is put down compost, then the newspaper, then the other organic material. This fall, pile on the organic material. This material breaks down constantly, keeping all the beneficial soil life alive and in high amounts, the earthworm population will explode, and the earthworms till the ground and incorporate the constand supply of newly broken down organic material into the soil to feed the plants, it prevents soil erosion, prevents loss of moisture, keeps weeds from growing, ect.
