The tricky thing with ear infections is that there is no way the doctor knows if it is viral or bacterial. It is very rare that the infection is bacterial. So most times the ear infection doesn't need Antibiotics . And the child then suffers through Antibiotic side effects for no reason.
When my child has had ear infections I have never given anitibiotics. I give the numbing ear drops. Sometimes the garlic oil ear drops (depending how sensitive the ear is) and garlic and vitamin c orally. Don't be afraid to give acetaminophen for extreme discomfort - especially in the middle of the night when you have a screaming child. It is better for your child to be able to rest and sleep it off.
Check out all of the following articles on ear infections and the like - they are all from quite reputable sources.
