In another post I said that a doctor, when I got a sore that sounds similar to yours, told me that it was herpes (ie cold sore) without doubt. It lasted for almost two weeks. I thought it might be actually a bit of both of what you describe -- a virus, rather than a toxin, but definitely exiting.

It was possibly the most miserable experience of my life.
